The 4 most common types of scrap steel:
1. Alloy
Since alloy steel can be made from a wide variety of different metals, it’s one of the most common types of steel you’ll see. The common types of metals used to make alloy steel are copper, nickel, carbon, iron, silicon, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum. Alloy steel has so many different purposes and is often used in pipelines, spacecraft, transformers, generators, planes, and cars.
2. Stainless
This is probably the type of steel you’ve heard of the most. Most of your kitchen appliances are likely made out of stainless steel. This type of steel is highly reflective and very weather and water-resistant. It can also withstand high temperatures, which is why it’s often used in kitchen appliances. These are all reasons why it’s one of the most common types of steel used and a popular choice for kitchen appliances and medical equipment.
3. Carbon
When carbon metal is used to produce steel, it results in creating an extremely durable and strong material. When it comes to any type of metal for any type of purpose, its strength is a very important factor for people. Carbon steel is most commonly used in the construction and transportation industry. Steel metal is oftentimes used for railways, tools, wire, chisels, and any other items that deal with constant friction. There are different densities of carbon steel ranging from low (.30% carbon) to high carbon steel which includes up to 1.5% carbon.
4. Tool
Tool steel is created with a balanced blend of chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, and tungsten. The combination of these metals is truly incredible for making things such as tools. The mixture of metals creates very strong and hard steel. When used to create tools, tool steel can withstand warping and abrasion due to how strong it is, and it is an ideal metal for cutting, stamping, and making molds.
